TLUD Gasifier Stoves - A wood stove with a difference

The winner of the Sankalp 2010 award in the Clean Energy Sector – Established Enterprise Category, Servals’ TLUD Wood Gasifier Stove is a simple wood stove that is green and of low carbon emission. With other products such as the kerosene burnerkerosene stoveshybrid cooking stovesPlant Oil Stovesand Lamps already in the portfolio, Servals is indeed pleased to talk about their forays into the wood stove - TLUD stoves.

Some highlights

  • The key focus is to design an integrated cooking energy solution for the wood stove market that addresses the “front-end” and the “back-end”.
  • While the TLUD gasifier technology is not new, Servals’ TLUD Stove’s claim is that it represents a higher order of fuel efficiency, user friendliness, safety and newer user application.

  • Recognized as a “carbon neutral” initiative; In fact would be "carbon negative" when the charcoal is dumped back into the soil. Read more...   and about the charcoal burning accessory
  • Has the potential to create a series of economic activities around fuel collection and distribution.Read More...
  • Has a line-up of innovations in the pipeline. Read more

TLUD stands for Top Lit Up Draft. This is different from most of the ordinary cook stoves which are Bottom Lit Up Draft. There is a lot of interest in TLUD technology around the world since this saves around 75 % fuel material compared to a traditional 3 stone fire wood stove.

  1. A second advantage with TLUD technology is that it can accept a lot of waste materials as fuel like twigs, coconut shells, certain husks, dry grass, etc. Some of these fuels are also available at zero cost in specific instances
  2. A third advantage is that tree felling is not necessary for fuel, since residues as mentioned above is enough.

  3. A fourth advantage is that the entire process is carbon-neutral if the resultant charcoal is also burned. In case this charcoal is taken out and used as a soil conditioner, the entire process becomes carbon-negative. ie. practically, carbon is removed from the atmosphere and deposited in the soil. Hence TLUD technology is extremely environment-friendly.

The Process: The canister is filled with the fuel material. A small quantity of starter material is put on top of this fuel bed and set on fire. Primary air for combustion comes from below through the fuel bed. The heat from the fire pyrolysis the biomass immediately below to form pyrolysis gases. These gases move up and get combusted with the pre-heated secondary air that is fed from around. Once the pyrolysis is over, a small quantity of charcoal is left behind at the bottom of the canister. This charcoal is generally transferred to a metallic or earthern closed container where the fire gets put out in the absence of air. This charcoal can be used later for various purposes.

The present design used by Servals has been given by Dr. Paul S Anderson of US, with initial financial support for the Chennai project by the Rotary Club of Bloomington-Normal Sunset (Rotary District 6490 - East Central Illinois).

As it looks at present, TLUD Gasifier Stove technology holds tremendous potential in relation to greener environment and low carbon initiatives.

I DEFY YOU, DOORS!!!!!

kinderwagon
Choosing a stroller is one of the more daunting tasks that faces expectant parents. I know, I know. That’s ridiculous, but it’s true. I’ve seen women break down into sobs over choosing strollers because, more often than not, it’s just incredibly overwhelming. Now imagine you need to pick out a double. Walk away from that ledge and look into this great stroller:
The Kinderwagon Hop.
I was first approached by the inventors of the Kinderwagon several months ago. The design was unlike anything I had ever seen and I was immediately drawn to the idea of it: a double umbrella stroller that uses stadium seating so that the footprint isn’t much bigger than a single. WHA??????
I met Jennifer, the mother and co-inventor, for coffee at Starbucks in the Village and we went over the various features of the Hop. She had to run and take her eldest son to tap class (obsessed) so I grabbed the Hop and jumped on the train all the way back uptown. Anyone who has ever taken a double on the train knows that getting through the actual turnstiles and gates can be an issue. I went through the cheesegrater turnstile with no problem at all—it totally fit. Granted, if I had kids with me we would’ve gone through the door, but I don’t. So. We. Didn’t.
Here’s a quick rundown of the Kinderwagon Hop:
The front seat has 2 reclining positions and can be used from 6 months and up. The seat in the back (on top) reclines flat enough for a newborn (at least according to “industry standards”) and both seats hold 40 lbs. The canopy is removable and has two viewing windows. The breaks are flip-flop-friendly and the Hop stands when folded. There isn’t an automatic chassis lock when you fold, but the strap locking mechanism is quite easy to use. The wheels are a great size and there is rear and front-wheel suspension—great when you’re carting two wee ones around. Accessories? Kinderwagon has got you covered—literally. Rainshields, a cup holder and a removable diaper bag are included. Worried it’s heavy? The Hop is ONLY 21.5 lbs. P’SCUSE ME????
All of this for $299.99!!!!!!!!
The Hop is a great stroller for families who need a smaller double for twins around six months old—it’s a terrific travel stroller, and a WONDERFUL option to standard side-by-side umbrellas. Just think: doors are not an issue anymore. In fact, you can walk by doors and laugh at them.
The Kinderwagon Hop is available at Diapers.com.

GUESS WHAT????
Yeah, the lovely people at Kinderwagon have generously decided to give my readers a chance to win one! Be one of the first people, if not THE first person, to have one of these innovative strollers!!! This contest will begin right now, August 8th, and end on August 22 and Midnight EST!!!

GEORGIA AQUARIUM RETURNS TO HOST FISHACKATHON

Atlanta 3

Georgia Aquarium is excited to once again participate in the annual Fishackathon, an overnight computer coding competition to develop solutions for sustainable fishing. With our oceans facing numerous threats, Fishackathon brings together coders, developers and designers from all over the world to create new and innovative tools to address one of the biggest challenges in conservation. This year’s event will take place on April 23-24 to kick off Earth Day, and we can’t wait to see the projects from our participants!

Fishackathon was launched in 2014 out of Secretary of State John Kerry’s Our Ocean Conference and has spread across the world to cities in Asia, Latin America, Europe and right here in Atlanta! Hosted by the U.S. Department of State, this event challenges participants to develop applications, systems, tools and other practical solutions to problems presented by global fishery experts.  At the end of the hackathon weekend, the teams will present their work to a panel of judges, who will choose a winner from each city to compete for international grand prizes.
Georgia Aquarium is especially proud of our winning team from last year, KnowFish, who won the “Our Ocean” grand prize as the People’s Choice Award winner! Facing competition from 10 other winning teams from across the globe, Team KnowFish traveled to Santiago, Chile, for the Our Ocean Conference with Secretary Kerry, and presented their app to combat illegal fishing.
Developed by Liz King, J.R. Rickerson, Gene Chorba and Greg Phillips, the KnowFish app displays fish species and fishing laws and regulations based on the user’s location. This incredible project provides a mobile tool for countries that may lack the resources to effectively address Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activities in their areas, and enables users to report illegal fishing and seafood activities. Their presentation highlights the global importance of sustainable fishing methods, and how reducing illegal fishing activity protects our oceans and the animals within.
